I beleive that the Battle of Ethandun was very important in the history of Anglo-Saxon England. Alfred's victory at Edington had major ramifications on the English people, and all of Britain, yet it did not have the immediate effect that some of the other aforementioned battles did.
Alfred's victory at Ethandun gave him freedom of movement, at least in his own Wessex, and some small parts of other kingdoms. After Ethandun, and the subsequent Treaty of Wedmore, Alfred did not have to worry about another round of Viking invasions of Wessex He finally had the breathing room which was necessary for the makeover of Wessex. Alfred could now reconsolidate West Saxon lands, and gather his own strength, without having to use it all against an invading Danish army. this also gave time for Alfred to put out pro-West Saxon propaganda to the Welsh, and rethink his foreign policy against the other native peoples of Britain. Although the Treaty of Wedmore was eventually broke(big surprise), West Saxon victory at the Battle of Ethandun was very important to the history of Britain in general.
