I've read a lot about the "First Triumvirate" of Caesar, Pompey and Crassus, and of the second. Although Cato and others thought that the end of the Republic came with the first Triumvirate, because three "outsiders" banded together to manipulate politics as they pleased, it seems pretty small beer compared to what the Second Triumvirate did 15 years later - as if, by that time, no one even wanted to try to preserve the mask of legality, and it was just every man for himself.
