We have departed from Aila, using the northern route, through the gorge of the Wadi Yetm, and past the three outposts that guard it -- Kithara, Khalde (ancient Presidium), and Quwera. I am pleased with their present state of readiness. There is a rumor that the Persians have made a raid into the neighboring province so we must be on our guard.
As the caravan lumbers northward over a stretch of barren desert toward Petra, we are met by a dispatch rider from the provincial capital, Bostra.
The rider has brought a decree from the Emperor, himself. I break the seal and read the document while he waits patiently to see if there will be a reply. Malichus arranges for him to rest and to water his horse and then for the servants to bring him some food and drink.
I am thunderstruck as I read the decree, wondering to myself, "Why does he wish to arrest them?" Then it occurs to me that Maximinus still fears those who are devoted to the Severan dynasty. Does he fear that his throne is insecure? But why them?" I ponder this before deciding that it must be their rumored connection with the former Emperor's mother, Julia Avita Mamaea that he fears. It is an unfounded rumor, I am sure. Nevertheless, I must do what needs to be done.
I call for my scribe. "Take this down and give it to the messanger to take back to my cousin, Prince Rabbel, in Bostra."
I sigh, thinking of the events that have been put in motion by the Emperor's decree. I am not in favor of it but, in these dangerous times, I must obey. Protest or dissent will do no good and it will only serve to weaken the Empire's unity. In the face of the Persian threat, we must present a strong, united front.
