Despite all those cool pictures and plans of the ancient Roman DOMUS it would appear that at least 3/4 of the free citizens of Roma slept in those vile insulae rooms/apartments detailed in postings above. And my guess is that rather less than 5% of free citizens owned an urban villa in Roma.
Out in the countryside the Villa Rustica was much more common, but most of them would have been working farms with the usual rich array of smells to assault the nostrils - not to mention the usual filth.
Does anyone here know how common the DOMUS was in towns and cities outside Roma?
