I loved RoTK and I'm going to see it again this Friday. I thought it was wonderful on many levels, but I do feel that it was flawed. It's at times like this I wonder if it's best to read the books first before seeing the films, or read the books AFTERWARDS. Personally, I devoured the books in my teens and on many occasions since. It's a wonder I don't have chronic indigestion. Watching RoTK, I found myself dissatisfied with several parts of the screenplay and would have wished them handled differently - no doubt because I had the book in the back of my mind.
Additionally, it was very fractured and with several loose ends that desperately need tying up. Hopefully, these will be addressed in the Extended DVD, which to my mind is now the REAL film - at least that's certainly true for the EDVD of both FoTR and TTT.
That said, it was still a wonderful achievement, with many intensely moving moments. Overall, the Trilogy is a piece of cinematic history.
