First of all, it’s not new, but I absolutely love the Gandalf/Balrog battle in the beginning. When I first watched the film at the cinema, I really hadn’t expected it, or for it to be done quite so well.
On the whole, I thought the Extended Edition was a great improvement on the movie. I personally feel FOTR EE is a better film, but I’m still very grateful for the additions to TTT.
The new scene with the Elven rope and Shire salt was very nice. I thought it made for a good re-introduction for Frodo and Sam, and, well... I’m just happy to see the rope used, I guess. :)
Although I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have had the patience for it at the cinema, I found the addition of more Treebeard material to be enjoyable for home-viewing. Particularly the dialogue concerning the Entwives. I was also happy to see that the Ent-draught made it in.
The funeral procession for Theodred was effective. I loved how Eowyn delivered her song.
One of my favorite additions is the Faramir/Boromir/Denethor flashback. The tension between these men was well presented, and I feel it added nice character-touches to all involved.
I really don’t understand why the resolution of the Gimli/Legolas competition wasn’t in the Theatrical Edition. It was quite a short moment, after all, and very satisfying.
