LET'S VIKING!!! - The Obscure Obstacle Race (196 posts)
    General Thread 0 Featured October 11 , 2003

Grab a boat and get an idea of what it was to be a Viking!!! Skill with their boats and courage was essential to the brave men of the North, but also the ability to face unexpected challenges and to cooperate with others to reach the final goal. Here you can prove yourself by making your way through a parcours which puts a variety of obstacles in your way.

Kadin and Leela aren't sure whether or not it's too late for the competition, but they decide it would be fun to try the course anyway. They walk down to their boat with some unusual supplies...a large basket of fish and a smaller basket of stones.

Leela climbs carefully into the boat, taking her seat on the forward bench and pulling on a pair of warm, thick gloves. Kadin hops into the back of the boat as he pushes off from shore, then sits down on the rear bench.

Kadin says, "The current is taking us right to the waterfall. When we get close, pull in the oars, bend down, and hold on tightly. We don't want the oars to snap when we hit the bottom."

He keeps glancing over his shoulder as he rows, and sees the mist rising from the edge of the waterfall. "Now Leela...we're almost there!"

They pull in their oars and stow them in the bottom of the boat, then bend forward and tightly grip the sides. Leela risks a glance and sees the bow of the boat suspended in space. She yells, "Here we goooooooooooooo....."

They land at the bottom of the falls with a bone-jarring thump, their boat rocking wildly from side to side for awhile before it finally calms. With a sigh of relief they pick up their oars again, just as the first faint tendrils of fog begin to surround them.

Kadin says, "I'll keep rowing, slowly...you throw the stones. Keep us bearing to starboard."

Leela stows her oars and picks up the basket of stones, throwing them one at a time off the starboard side of the boat and listening for them to strike the cliffs. Thunk, thunk, thunk, splash. "Kadin, bear more to starboard."

He steers with the oars, trying to keep them close to the land on the starboard side of the boat. "How's this?"

Splash. Splash. "More starboard Kadin." Splash. Thunk. Thunk. "There, that's good...and I can see the end of the fog now...keep it straight."

Leela gasps at what she sees beyond the fog bank. The Midgard Serpent is waiting for them, looking distinctly annoyed by all the irritating people it has had to deal with today.

Leela croons gently to the monster, "Nice snake, niiiice snake...or dragon...or whatever you are. We have a lovely little treat for you." She begins flinging fish up toward the serpent's mouth, its head darting from side to side as it eagerly snaps up the fish. Leela throws the last few fish as far as she can on the far side of the serpent. While the serpent turns away from them to pluck the fish out of the water, Leela quickly sits down and grabs her oars, joining Kadin in rowing as if their lives depended on it (which is probably the case).
