One of the most impressive buildings within the Maya region is the Pyramid of the Dwarf or as it is called sometimes the Pyramid of the Magician. According to the legend this pyramid was build over night, but in fact thereare five periods of construction. Like most of our temples, we've build a new one on top of the older one, after every 52 years.

As you can see it is an extraordinary building, which is the highest of our province. It is build in the Puuc style: rather bare on the lower part and with detailed decorations on higher levels.

The outer walls have a layer of red plaster Red for the colour of the East, where it all began and the decorations are painted in bright yellow and blue, with some touches of black (these colours each stand for a different direction).

For Uxmal, Chac (our god of rain and thunder) is very important, since this is one of the dryer regions. Therefore it will not surprise you that the figure of Chac adorning this pyramid in abundance. See if you can count how many times...

You will recognize hime by his staring eyes, big teeth, square earrings and of course his reptile-shaped nose.

You are, not allowed to climb the pyramid, since this is only permitted to the holy man in the city, but if you want to say a prayer or make an offering to Chac, you can do so in the smaller temple on the ground level, just behind the eastern staircase.
