Greetings! First of all, thanks for the reply. I just hope this is the right message board to post these stuff. Anyway, I went to the link on the Visigothic code. I am impressed at how the Visigoths created a constitution of some sort. One question though - I noticed that Christianity was already prevalent based on the last section. Does this mean that they merely added to their pre-exisiting or shall I call it 'ancient' code or did they create this all at one point in time - specifically when they were Christianized?
And yes, that is true. With all the migrating and splitting into factions, their original customs and laws may just have been interbred with others (or a good deal of them lost to the passage of time). Christianity, as you have said, played a big part in it as well. Therefore, I think a good place for me to start would be from Early Germanic law and original native customs (if possible, before the introduction of Christianity) so that I could see and compare the changes that time has imposed on them. Oh and is this a fact? I've read in one website that early Germanic religion is similar to (or is actually) Viking religion, with the Aesir and the Vanir for their pantheon.
I wish I could find books devoted to this subject. I have a book called Vikings by Roesdahl. And it actually detailed most (if not everything) things about them - their customs and laws (to my liking). Very comprehensive. Now if there was a Goth book like it ....
Anyway, thanks again and thanks for taking the time to do an article about this. I'll be looking forward to it.
Till next time,
Heavenstorm
