Fortune smiled upon us early yesterday morning. Some of the men
found the secret entrace to a hidden cave. It was barely large
enough to hold all of us at one time.
It was sheer chance, or a blessing of the gods that we happened upon it at all. One of the ship's crew noticed the crevass opening, then pushed a large rock and it moved to reveal stored plunder.
Plunder can be the only word for it. There were many crates, all
of which had been opened and pillaged. Many of the magnificent
tapestry, fine silks, linens had been torn assunderd. Jewelry broken, torn appart then thrown with apparent haste back into the crates. Why had they done this? There was no sign of the young girl. I hoped that she had not been harmed. She was of more value to them alive than dead. They must realize this.
We needed to make a list of all that we had found. The girl's
family would have to verify that these were being sent with her to Corfu.
There was also a stash of amphora stashed in the cave. Some of them had been broken into.
It would take us all morning to sort it all out, and drag it back to the ship.
Once again storm clouds were brewing, and I overheard some of the men muttering, the sooner they got back to their own familys the better.
