    In Jane Hirshfield's "Women in Praise of the Sacred," the author explains that Kojiju (a buddhist nun from the 12th century) poetry reflects the Buddhist teaching that enlightenment is innate: not something to be looked for outside ourselves, but always already present, waiting to be seen at any moment.

    "Merely to know
    the Flawless Moon dwells pure
    in the human heart
    is to find the Darkness of the night
    vanished under the clearing skies."

    Kojiju

    And in Tao Te Ching Chapter 47, translated by Ursula K. Le Guin, we can read:

    "You don't have to go out the door
    to know what goes on in the world.
    You don't have to look out the window
    to see the way of Heaven.
    The farther you go
    the less you know.

    So the wise soul
    doesn't go, but knows;
    doesn't look, but sees;
    doesn't do, but gets it done."
