Dagbert was from an old family, which was down on its luck. To regain some of its wealth he had set out with a few of his most loyal men to sell their swords to the highest bidder. While his reputation as a Mercenary Captain was good it had none the less led him to this isolated outpost working for a dullard with little concept as to how to use good men.
It seemed his arrival was most unexpected and of misfortune for the lord of Flanders. Dagbert had secured the post & repulsed the attack of the new lord. The lands were of more value to Flanders than to his own temporary lord. The small outpost was still undermanned to repel a major attack but well enough to last long enough for help to arrive. Thus far the garrison had sustained no loses but blood had been let on the other side.
Dagbert despised treachery but he liked less losing good men for no good reason; besides there was little chance of gaining wealth standing a siege against a neighboring lord. It may be a wiser course to treat with Lord Baldwin of Flanders than to await aid. Already he stood little chance of actually recovering the pay owed to him & his men.
Yes, he would send Baldwin II a message at once under a flag of truce.
