From Alfred, king of the Western and Southern Saxons,
To Guthrum, his brother in Christ, I send Greeting:
It being well known that peace is a more desirable estate than war, and a blessing of God to men, it behooves us to sign with all haste that treaty to which we agreed in principle these many months gone.
In token of our bond in Christ, I send to you this gift of a golden crucifix, with a piece of the True Cross under crystal and charge you to abide by your oath in the love and fear of the Lord God. Hereby I invite you to my seat at Witanceastre where within this Holy Season of Eastertide we shall affix our seals to the treaty agreed upon amongst ourselves regarding the division of lands among our peoples.
Thus, let it be known that I request your presence here as my sworn guest in all safety and surety, that we two servants of Christ might further God's work in this land by concluding this peace between our two nations.
Deo gratias.
Alfred
