Leda looked up, with a smile masking her suspicion of this apparent foreigner. With her eyes, she directed her crewmates to slide down the bench, leaving room for the newcomer at the end.
He sat down.
Leda went on drinking for a time, ignoring this man. She talked quietly to the guys next to her and to the servers as they brought her more ouzo. Her mind flashed to her home in Kommos, the one that she had not seen for months. She did not like this man's assertion that they weren't all natives of Crete, however true or false it was. There was transparency in his words and actions revealing a motive she did not want to know.
She'd had enough. Maybe it was the bribe of drinks, maybe it was his looks but she was tired and didn't care to figure it out.
With a flash of her eyes and a quiet movement of her hand holding the cup of ouzo, she signaled. And the row of crew next to the newcomer all stood up. Sitting at the end of the bench, the man's body weight took care of everything. Like a seesaw the bench raised and he tumbled off.
The crew sat back down laughing.
Leda laughed, downed her drink and left to find her way home.
