There are also totems set up around the grounds and by the gift shop. Most have plaques describing the images, or at least the method of creation or use. (In fact, there are beautiful totems all around Victoria. Maybe I will upload some photos to show you.)
I was lucky enough to get in on the end of a tour of the totem poles, wherein the docent explained how and why they are made. The one detail that stuck out in my mind was the meaning of upside-down images. He said (and this is not a quote!) that these upside-down images are to perpetually humiliate the person (or family, etc) that it represents. Perhaps it/they had done an injustice to the family who commissioned the pole, so that way of representation is the family forever thumbing their nose at the bad guy/s. I found this both funny and amazing, in that people are people, no matter their background!
