I am amazed. I am astounded. I am totally flabbergasted!!! Apil has finally admitted that he exaggerated "a bit" in one of his previous posts. I am marking this down as a Red Letter Day on my personal calendar! *G*
All kidding and teasing aside, I do believe that every society and civilization, from the Neolithic onward, has invented (or discovered) some form of beer. I say "discovered" because fermentation is one of those things that just happens. If you stick some grain and some water in a jug and let it sit for a few days, it will start to ferment. All it takes to get started is a little bit of yeast, and yeasts are everywhere! The trick is to make something that doesn't taste like it has been filtered through a camel! That's where the flavorings come in. Hops, skerrit weed, anise, grapes... almost anything will do.
As for the grain, I've tried making beer from everything from barley to rice to wheat. About anything with starch in it will work. I even made some from potatoes, once. It was pretty nasty! *G*
And now, all this talk has made me thirsty. Belly up to the bar, friends, This round is on me! Stop pushing, Apil! Here's yours!!!
