Jack has new problems with his eye, alas. He was being a bit moody and acting rather odd, so we took him to the vet on Monday. The vet discovered that his upper jaw was very soft and x-rays showed a lot of bone deterioration under the place where his eye was removed. The two probabilities were either a bone infection (nasty, but treatable) or the cancer had come back (nothing to do). The vet took a sample and started antibiotics as prophylaxis.
The results came back yesterday: both, maybe. There is definitely an infection and it is responding to treatment. Jack is eating normally again (but holding out for the good stuff, especially the extra little tins of Sheba and the leberwurst around his pills) and the swelling appears to be going down. But the lab also found a couple of "suspicious" large cells in the sample. They can't say it's definitely cancer, and they can't rule it out. Considering it is right under where the previous tumor was, it probably isn't just an infection. But we have to wait and see how the antibiotics do and then we'll make whatever time he has left the best we can.
