Hmm, I never heard of supporting potatoes with straw. When I used to grow them, I planted them in slightly raised mounds. Anyone else have potato growing experience? As for the Chinese Elms, aside from using herbicides like RoundUp on the stumps (and I don't think you really want to do that if you are trying to be environmentally safe!) there isn't much to do except try to pull the small plants up by hand as they appear, being especially diligent about digging up the roots.
Your garden sounds like it's really getting to be magnificent, Mo'! Got any pictures to share?
I've been trying to find time to take a few photos of my tomato plants, basils and marigolds, which are the stars of my garden right now. Either my work schedule or the weather has been preventing that but I'll keep trying.
