... since decades one of the leading experts on Roman topography and his GUIDA ARCHEOLOGICA DI ROMA, in its various editions, has pretty much become the standard work for students and ambitious tourists. I haven't seen the English version "ROME AND ENVIRONS" (2007), which you are reading right now and which, as far as I can understand from the info, also has some updated and revised chapters from his other books in the Guide archeologiche Laterza series.

Ever since I bought my first copy of ROMA , back in the 1980's, I've always appreciated Coarelli , his admirable thoroughness and precision, blended with a visionary idea of the role of archeology.

How I wish you could read this interview with Prof. Coarelli from 2005. Sadly enough it's not available in English, but I'll leave it here nevertheless just in case.

Born in the fateful year 1936, Coarelli is one of the last Italian archeologists with a personal memory of the fascist period. In spite of his age, he is still working as professor at the University of Perugia (in Umbria) and he is also a much-demanded speaker at meetings and conferences.
He is, for instance, as it seems, scheduled for the 17th International Congress of Classical Archaeology, which will be held in Rome bw 22-26 Sept this autumn on the theme " Cultural exchanges across the Mediterranean".
