... due to gravity, but it was Einstein who said that we live in a sea of gravity waves. Only problem is, no one has actually seen these waves.
One attempt to find out is through the Einstein@Home project, which is similar to another @Home item that is attempting to discover an alien presence in space via radio astronomy. Two detectors, one in Germany and the other in the US, are collecting vast amounts of data that must be analyzed in order to determine if gravity waves actually exist. And your PC or Mac can help.
You can start by visiting this page, reading the instructions, and downloading a bit of software for PC, Mac or Linux. (If you're on dialup, I would recommend against it, as large amounts of data must be sent back and forth.) While you work, the program runs in the background; if you set your screensaver to it, while you're away from the computer, the screen will show the constellations with a scanning crosshairs moving across them. On a typical PC, a work unit can take about a day or two to analyze.
So, if you'd like to help find something no one has seen yet, install Einstein@Home and be a part of history.
