Tiberius Gallus found that his heart was racing uncontrollably. He felt that same mixture of fear and exhiliration that he first experienced when he was learning to gallop in formation across the Campus Martius so many years ago. It was like he was in the carts alongside his drivers!
The strategy his teams were to employ in the race was simple, straight-forward, and driven by simple biology.
His first team, Quadriga Rutillius Gallina, were all mares. They were lighter and faster horses than Quadirga Volatilius Fuga, who were all stronger--but heavier and slightly slower--stallions.
He smiled as he thought of the game plan devised by Pullio Casca. "Them mares is fast, and one o' 'em's in heat, so she is! Get that team out in front, an' the stallion's will run like hell to catch up wi' her! Nobody runs as fast as a horny bastard, 'cept the gal what's tryin' to get away from 'im!"
Fine, Casca! Gallus thought as the pack neared the first turn. Let's give your grand plan a try and see how it all works out!
