The Gracchi, Champions of the Plebs, lie dead. Marius, Sulla, the great names of known history shall never come to prominence here. Will you take their role in history?

Decius Gorgo stopped for a minute to observe the workmen unloading lead pipes in front of the villa of one Lucius Cassius Longinus Ravilla. From the looks of things, this project, now nearing completion, had been begun several weeks earlier. It was now mid-way through the month of Iunius. This project, extensive as it was, had to have been begun at least by the nones of Maius…in other words, at least a week before the trial of Titus Vitulus had begun!

Strolling up to the man who appeared to be the foreman, Gorgo began by identifying himself as an aquarius and complimenting the crew on the quality of their work. Indicating that he needed to commission a very similar work project, he made inquiries as to the cost of the project and the time needed to complete the work.

The foreman, basking in the glow of the compliments he’d just received from a prominent engineer, was quite talkative. “Well, as you know, Aquarius, a project like this here isn’t finished in a hurry…not if you want some quality results. And the price, of course varies…this particular job was done below cost, way below, but there were some sort of an arrangement with the client our foundry’s owner, Titus Vitulus. Have you heard of him? I could arrange an appointment if…”

Interrupting him, Gorgo said, “Yes, I’d like that very much. Now, getting back to your timeline to complete a job like this. I definitely would want a quality project, with no corners cut. Just to give me an idea of the job’s length, can you tell me when exactly you began this one?”

Ye Gods! thought Gorgo as the foreman told him the start date for the work on Ravilla’s villa. Gallus was right! This job was begun—at an unimaginable discount—exactly ten days before the trial began…but after the jury had been selected!

Making note of the foreman’s name, Gorgo took his leave. “Thank you again, Marcus Plancus. You have been very helpful. I will mention you to Titus Vitulus when I contract my next job with him.” And, thought the aquarius to himself with a wry smile, to the prosecuting advocate when he draws up his list of witnesses!
