The May 2008 issue of National Geographic is focused entirely on China. Mostly, it's about modern day China and the recent changes and development, but there is some history and a good article on the Dong minority in Dimen in the southeastern Guizhou province, who carry on their own traditions much as they always have. There's a great explanatory map of the Forbidden City too, though I don't see that in the online edition.
