I was 17 at the time of my marriage to Gaius, a bit older than the norm but my normally very conservative, very traditional and old fashioned parents had taken their time to find the proper match for their only daughter. Though Gaius is quite liberal on some issues, he is still conservative in his support of the Republic so my parents arranged my marriage to him.
My earliest years as a child was spent playing with my dolls, especially Flava who was my favorite. Things changed when I turned 12. My mother let me take on a few of the household chores such as running the kitchen for the evening meals and when I was 14, I was setting the work load for the slaves of the household. By the time I was 16, I was running the whole house from morning to night so I was well prepared for my life as a matrona and find that I enjoy many of the duties expected of a Roman matrona.
I am quite tall for a Roman woman, almost 5’7” but its a trait that runs in my family. At 29, I am strong and in very good health. My husband always tells me that I’m beautiful but I suspect he may feel obligated to say so, though others have said I’m very good looking and carry myself with dignity.
Our first son, Gaius, was born a little over a year later. He is now a tall young boy of 10, all arms and legs, Drakus, our youngest son, was born 2 years later and though stockier than his older brother, is otherwise almost the spitting image of him.
Managing the family properties and two active young boys have kept me very busy - too busy for most of the frivolity that seemed to overtake many a young wife in Rome in recent years as Rome began to grow as a world power. It wouldn’t matter, though - my old fashioned upbringing and own naturally pragmatic nature would naturally keep me away from such distractions. It is my greatest home that at the end I will be remembered by the words “She counselled well, She managed well. She spun wool.”
But only a fool would dismiss me. My family is of the upmost importance. I take a personal interest in the education of my sons and the advancement of my husband’s career and would take what measures I feel are necessary to see to both.
