Since no one else has had a go at responding to your questions about Rome, let me try:
1. Okay- the series was great as far as realism, but wasn't Alexandria a GREEK city and Cleopatra a GREEK queen of Egypt...?
Is it likely that Cleo wore wigs and heavy make-up or would she have dressed herself and hair in greek fashion?
The Ptolemys had ruled Egypt for about 250 years by the time Cleopatra became queen, and we do have Egyptian art showing her in the traditional Egyptian fashion, so yes, they were probably on pretty firm ground having her wear both Egyptian and grecian hair, makeup, etc.
2. I know there were credible witnesses to Antyllus's execution in Alexandria- but what of Ceasarian? I have read that his tutors betrayed him and agreed to bring him back to the city and that's all I know historically... (I know- I know, I'm an amature)
Pretty good for an amateur, I've never read anything saying just how Caesarian was killed! Yup, with the final episode (in fact, the whole sub-plot about Pullo fathering Caesarion) it's just wishful thinking, sadly. I guess no one was permitted to write, in detail, of just how Octavian knocked off Caesar's blood son, although McCullough's recent novel, Antony and Cleopatra, makes some interesting guesses.
3. The ending left us wondering whether or not Agrippa and Octavia would resume their affair. Didn't Agrippa mary Antonia Major at some point? (ewwww! icky!)
No, Agrippa actually married Octavian's daughter, Julia, a long time later. In fact, does anyone know who he married beforehand? (but it surely wasn't Octavia, sadly married to Antony)
4. In the series Posca has to steal Antony's will for Octavian to discover how he planned to distribute Roman and Egyptian Provinces among Cleo's children. Wasn't that the "Donations of Alexandria"....? I was thought it was a huge public proclamation and that the show probably skipped it because the production of such a scene would be grossly expensive. But a friend recently told me that the "donations of Alexandria" was just a ceremony to recognize Cleo's son as her co-ruler. (If someone could prove this friend wrong I'd be most thankful)
The Donations gave away large chunks of the Roman Empire to Antony's children by Cleopatra and to Cleopatra, which is why it made the Romans enraged. It was far more than a "big show" by my understanding. Posca steals the Will in the series, but in history Augustus himself steals the ruddy will, right out from under the Vestal Virgins - an utter no-no blasphemy. Still not sure just how he got away with it, but when he showed up in the Senate and read it out (in Rome 2 and in history), I guess no one troubled much about just how he got it.
Just my takes on things, but hope this helps ;)
