As the sun sets on the last day of our Northwest Potlatch, we have one more special moment to share. Handing out to each guest, a serving of dried seaweed (skuu), smoked salmon (gilgii), dried halibut (also called gilgii) herring roe (kaaw) displayed on green cedar boughs on individual scallop shells, we make sure everyone is comfortable in Chief Grande's smokehouse to watch The American Indian Dance Theater perform a traditional Makah paddle dance learned from a tribal group of the Pacific Northwest.
At the end of the performance, Raven Woman stands, and waving an eagle father gently through the air, offers up this Haida prayer:
