At the age of eight boys began school. There were two types of schools, the clan school and the nobles' schools. Clan schools had skilled warriors as teachers. Weapon training was the most important part of life. Students practiced with wooden weapons and went to real battle to help the older warriors. To make the boys tougher they were made to sleep in cold dormitories with hardly any covers. They were also taught history and some crafts, all teaching was done by heart. The boys were not taught to read and write.

The sons of nobles were taught by preists at special schools. These boys unlike the ones of clans were taught to read and write. They learned sacred religious rituals, astrology, history and law. These boys also received weapons training. They were made to fast for days. At times they were awakend in the middle of the night, and made to take cold baths. This was to make them fearless, their ears and tounges were pricked with cactus thorns.
