Belenus was the god of healing and the god of sight. Apparently the ancient Celts had poor eyesight, because there were temples built specifically for the blind and handi-capped.
Even after Rome came through Gaul, Belenus continued to be an important diety, taking on many of the characteristics Mars, giving his the name Belenus Mars. The Gaulish diety always came before the Latin. Perhaps a subtle form of rebellion by the Gaulish Celts?
