I know...Jot has said it before. I believe that the problem with bandwidth is with graphics, and posts don't really take up much space. Although combine posts with graphics and you might have a malotov cocktail ready to explode (or crash, depending on your analogy).
The problem is that AW is attracting a smaller audience than it used to attract. Why? I don't know. All sorts of reasons I suppose. Old time members have found different things to do. The military history nuts have all been called up and sent to forward positions. People who used to have one full-time job with benefits are working two jobs to make ends meet and now they don't have benefits or time for online communities. People prefer to watch reruns of Gidget Goes Berserk rather than work on hoods or spend the evening in a chat room. Maybe My Space is taking every body.
The problem isn't that AW is attracting a smaller audience. AW has always attracted a small audience. This is one of the reasons I stay here. I love the people that frequent this place. I know them, I can talk to them, and I can read what they post. Maybe this is a very selfish plea, but there are writers out there who really 'wow' me and I feel cheated because I can't read them anymore. I guess that is my biggest gripe. If they are gone because of the festivals, then I am against the festivals. If there was a way we could bring some of these people back while keeping the fests, I am all for it. But right now what I see is an abundance of fests, and a lack of what I came here for...which is, conversation with like minded people. Its not everywhere you can start up a conversation with someone about the fall of the Roman Empire, or the amount of amphorae located in Gaul that dates from pre-Roman times, showing they had trade aggrements with the Romans prior to Caesar's invasion. Where else can you get that sort of conversation?
The difference between myfacebookspace and this place is really quite unique. You can't instant message people at myspace without downloading a seperate program, or at any other space. The other history sites that are similar to AW have one flaw, they are deader than AW. Plus navigation is really hard. If you think navigation here is a pain, go to one of those other sites and see how much fun it is to get around.
I get what you're saying though. How much can we take until we break? I don't think much more. We've run out of server space this year (5 years of use, not bad) and the com panel went bad..( about 4 years with that on the new server).
Call it the sophomore slumps if you will, but I still frequent this place for the same reason I came here. To discuss history with like minded people. I do alot through grams, which I know is a waste to everyone else. I would like to see ideas formulated and posted on the boards, but that is just me.
We are a little past our sophomore slumps, but AW moves slower than regular time. We are all stuck in ancient times, aren't we?
