    Edo Theatre Scene (one of a series) - Kiyosada part 2


    This is another print in the early Meiji "Edo Theatre Scene" series by Kiyosada Torii, this time representing the stage. It's a perfect example of the delicacy of Kiyosada's design. Also, although it is difficult to discern, the borders are not plain but ornated with a technic known as gauffrage (karazuri in Japanese, that is embossing)

    While a few prints and print series have celebrated the Noh theatre, the vast majority are tied to the Kabuki theatre. This would be explained by the fact that Noh during the Edo era was reserved for an elite, whereas Kabuki was part of the entertainment on offer at Yoshiwara, the famously busy an colorful Edo district
