One of the reasons the movie Braveheart is not historically accurate is that Gibson - or his script writers? - based a lot of it on the wandering 15th century minstrel Blind Harry's epic poem, The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, which was written around 1470 AD.
While Braveheart admittedly has quite a few historical inaccuracies, it's an enjoyable film - Gibson at his most fun. The problem is that if you're aware of the history, it's not easy to enjoy even a good film that has so many laughable errors. I've learned to ignore my inner historian so that I can appreciate films from a filmic perspective.
