After a night of heavy drinking in Galway, Ireland, two scientists, Billy Quinn and Declan Moore were discussing their plans for the day over a plate of breakfast. It was in this hungover haze when Quinn had a breakthrough. The two were scheduled to excavate fulacht fiadh a nearby grassy mound that wasn't much to look at. Its a rectangular trough surrounded by a horseshoe arrangement of burnt stones. But Quinn suggests that it was actually one of Ireland's first breweries, predating the Guinness brewery by about, oh, 5,000 years.
You can read more of the story at wired, or if you want something else, BBC.
The most amazing thing about this story is that it only took the men 3 hours to brew the beer, and 3 days for it to ferment. Then it was drinkable. I was under the impression that it took alot longer.
