    THE WINTER MOON

    "The Winter Moon", is the oldest Christmas song from North America. It was written in the early part of the 17th century by Father Jean de Brebeuf in the Huron language for his Native American congregation. I present here the Huron words and the English paraphrase. The music is played in this sound file on an electronic Chinese di zi flute as it most closely approximates the Native American flute. I have recorded it electronically using a digital M-AUDIO keyboard played through a Garage Band soft ware program. and saved as a Flash document. This is a sound file turn on you sound.

    Huron Language

    Es ten ni a lon de tso nu e Jesus a ha ton ni a
    On na u a te ua 'd'o ki n'on an das kua en tak
    en on chi en skua tri ho tat h'o nu an di lon ra cha tha
    Jesus a ha ton ni a
    a ha ton ni a;
    Jesus a ha ton ni a.

    English Paraphrase

    The winter moon shone cold and clear when Jesus Christ was born.
    Then Git Chi Manitou sent singing angels from his throne.
    Their shining robes bedimmed each star
    and marveling hunters heard the choir
    Now salvation has come.
    Jesus is born
    Jesus Christ the Lord is born.
