They sat looking at each other impassively, both of them. I had been put on drinks duty, so I was pouring out honey flavoured liquor for the big players in the meeting.
Our Chief had given me a long, piercing look just before he sat, and then ignored me. Aja and Vidur were there, and so was Kuros. I was determined to pay attention this time, and sat down as close to the council as I could without attracting attention.
Yaska's eye found me, however, and I was dispatched to the edge of the camp until summoned.
I sat in the dark for what seemed like hours, awake, trying to swat at the mosquitoes which plagued the entire area by the water.
Finally, an Aurochs guard called me, and I followed him back into the firelit circle of the council.
Our Chief beckoned to me, and I went to him, making the formal bow of respect. He placed his hand on my bent head, and then ruffled my hair.
"so, you will be an Aurochs man for the next whole year." he said. "do not forget the ways of the Wolf. Look keenly and learn well, work hard and grow strong. You have a year to prepare for the race. We will come for you at the end of the year, and you will compete in the race as a Wolf Clan member."
The Aurochs are leaving the meadow in a week. You can come to your clan and take leave of your Grand mother and your friends. After the week is over, you will return to the Aurochs, and move with them.
You will belong to the family of Kavus, the medicine man, and his wife Avni. Their own son died in the flood, and they will be glad to care for you. Obey your father kavus, and respect your mother Avni. You will owe Yaska the same obedience you owe me, for this year.
Come now, we must leave."
