Chinquapins are tiny sweet nuts that grow on bushes or small trees. The nuts are encased in prickly pods which open to expose the ripe nuts. When I was a girl, chinquapins grew wild in the mountains and we spent many a fall day gathering them. We ate them raw but they're supposed to be good roasted too.
