CATARACTA CURIA

Reate’s Wonder of the World
|
Since the end of the Sabine Wars, when Rome’s territory was extended to include Upper Sabinium and lands beyond, all the way to the Adriatic Sea, the Cataracta Curia has stood out as a tribute to one Roman’s devotion to the welfare of the plebs, and a love of nature.Following his first year as consul, Manius Curius Dentatus, the man who subdued the last Sabine insurrection, oversaw the draining of a section of the lacus Velinus and the channeling of its waters over a cliff and into the river Nar. By drying out the low-lying fields around Reate, not only did Curius Dentatus create the first Wonder of the Roman World, he also made available countless iugera of arable farmland. Today, the plain’s fertility is renowned all over Italy, earning it the name of Campus Rosea.
“Caesar Vopiscus, when pleading a cause before the Censors, said that the fields of Rosia are the very marrow of Italy, and that a stake, left in the ground there one day, would be found covered by the grass the next.” Pliny, Natural History XVII, 3. |
