Senex's Sampan
The word sampan means "three planks" in Cantonese, and it refers to the construction of the hull. One plank forms the flat bottom, and the other two planks form the sides. Ordinarily these wooden boats are used for fishing or transportation in rivers or in costal waters, but some sampans include a small shelter on board and may be used as a permanent habitation. Traditionally sampans are propelled by poles or oars, but they may also be fitted with outboard motors. photo of sampan courtesy of Leonard G.
