Fēntáo Guan, North Hamlet
馆分桃 House of the Bitten Peach
During the Tang Dynasty, the North Hamlet was Chang'an's Gay Quarter, where the high-class courtesans resided and entertained nobles, rich merchants, and officials and civil service graduates from the nearby examination halls and offices. It was in the northwesternmost area of the city's east central sector, adjacent to the Eastern Market, and consisted of three winding alleys - North Alley, Central Alley and South Alley - lined with large, tranquil bordellos. Appropriate to its name of the Gay Quarter, the North Hamlet was also where the city's significant homosexual community was concentrated.
