The legend has it that our great province was established by the "Crocodile" King himself, one of the kings of the Dynasty 0. Unfortunately not many records and monuments has survived the "Unification Wars" of the savage "Catfish" Narmer. But nevertheless we still honor our founding father by his great seal which became a lucky emblem of our province.

In fact due to the ancient tradition of crocodile cult we are now able to prove the antiquity of our Nome and of our Capital city, since the age of the cemeteries go well beyond first dynasty. But not only we were one of the most ancient settlement in Egypt we were also the first ones to embrace benefits of cultural advancement of the Early Sumerians, since they often chose to travel through our province. Unmistakable Sumerian influence, among other things, could be traced to advancement of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing and to so-called 'paneled-facade' type of architecture.

Perhaps, Sumerians in those ancient times brought into Egypt cult of Goddess Inanna as well. Innana or Ishtar, as called by Babylonians, was worshipped as a force of life, goddess of fertility and sexuality. So in many respects she was identical to goddess Hathor.

Goddess Innana

Weather or not Hathor originally came from Sumerians, perhaps we'll never know. But what we know for sure is that, indeed, Hathor was universally worshipped throughout the Egypt and Dendera especially. It is believed that her shrines were even more numerous than those of Horus.

Even pharaohs included name of Hathor in their titulary as pharaoh Pepi I did, his nomen would read - "The son of Hathor, the lady of Dendara, Pepi".

And we think that due to this special love to Hathor Pepi I established the shrine of Hathor in Dendera, on his way to the war with the Nubians.

River Nile has rolled lot of water since the time of "Crocodile". We grew richer, wiser, became stronger and more skilled. The fate has blessed us with the divine patronage of Great Goddess Hathor. Our fields bring more barley, we brew best beer on the Nile, "The Nile Mud - Black and Tan".
