Realm of the Dark Elves

In Norse mythology, Svartálfaheim is the underground domain and home of the Svartálfar (meaning the black elves or dwarves), according to Snorri Sturluson. Note that this could be the same place as the underground realm Niđavellir in other manuscripts.

According to the early Nordic reference, the Edda Gylfaginning by Snorri Sturluson of the 13th century, Snorri refers to Svartálfaheim as a place where dwarves ("dverga nökkurra") made Gleipnir. The following translation exists:

"So Alfather [Alföđr] sent the youth, who is called Skirner, and is Frey's messenger, to some dwarfs [dverga nökkurra] in Svartalfheim [Svartálfaheim], and had them make the fetter which is called Gleipner [Gleipnir]." -- Gylfaginning, 13th century.
