Egypt's Sepat of...
Lower: Prince of the North
Historical Region
Nome of the Prince of the North. Nineteenth Nome of Lower Egypt
Cities of the Nome of the Prince of the North:
  • Piri-amsese (House of Rameses), Avaris (Greek), Qantir, Tell el-Dab'a (Arabic).
  • Djan'net, Tanis (Greek), San el-Hagar (Arabic).

Located mid-Delta, on the eastern side near a route to the Suez, the Nome of the Prince beguiles and calls.

The lushness of the region has perhaps paradoxically destroyed much the remains of a remarkable period of ancient Egyptian history, that of the period of Ramesses II, who oversaw 65 years of rule from the fabled seat of Piri-amsese.

The current Arabic locales of el-Khata'na, Tell el-Da'ba, and Qantir are all located next to each other.

Further to the north and slightly to the west in this nome lies Djan'net (Tanis, San el-Hagar). Here, one finds an enclosure built by Psuesennes I and added to by others, to Amon. Djan'net also boasts 6 royal tombs of the 21st and the 22nd Dynasties. The precinct of Mut, which was constructed by Siamun, Apries, and Ptolmey IV Philopator are also within the realm of Djan'net.
