Jumping off points from the Baltic into mother Russia

Settlers from Sweden and Gotland established the colony of Grobin, which is today in Latvia. The settlement appears to have been founded in the mid-seventh century AD. Excavations have been made here, and three graveyards discovered, indicating a relatively longstanding settlement. This trading centre seems to have been abandoned in about 800 AD, possibly having been destroyed by raiders.
