Tusculum was situated on an oblong, narrow hill running east-west, some 3000 feet long. The acropolis was situated in the eastern end of the hill, with a fine Roman theatre at its foot; then the Forum; then, in the extreme western edge of the town, the amphitheatre.

A road linked the acropolis with the lower town, and with the theatre cramme3d against the high ridge, the Via Tecta actually allowed the main street of Tusculum to run through a tunnel underneath the tier of seating on the northern part of the auditorium.
