All those who live there acknowledge the Bendahara as the district/village chief (Penghulu) and pay the Bendahara in either service in kind or a moderate tithe in the form of monetary or farm/jungle produce every half a year as tax for living there. In return, the Bendahara undertakes civic projects for the betterment of the district, provides a feast for the inhabitants comes every religious or state holiday, as well as sending his men out to patrol the district every night to ensure all is well.
Some of the attractions in Kampung Bendahara are: the Masjid Harimau, the main mosque in the district; Jalan Anak Sungai, where most of the shops are located; the Menara Tun Perak, the tall stone tower where one can climbs to see most of the city and the Taman Wan Saleha, a park opened by the Bendahara for the district inhabitants enjoyment.
One must not also forget Astaka Bendahara, the Bendahara’s personal pavilion, as well as the Jalan Baju Raya, where most of the finest Melaka tailors and seamstresses are located. One could dress like a Melakan orangkaya (nobleman) in all finery, provided one has the sufficient money to pay the high prices quoted! ![]() Write-up courtesy of Daeng Diponogoro ![]()
