HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The deme of Skambonidai belonged to the Leontis tribe and was one of the Asty (Urban) demes. It was situated north of the Akropolis, within the city walls. It was a relatively large and wealthy deme, sending three representatives to the Boule, Athens' city council.

Skambonidai's (and of the Leontis tribe as a whole) eponymous hero was Leos, son of Orpheus and father of Euboule, Praxithea and Theope who sacrificed themselves to save Attica from a plague, in obedience to an oracle.

One of the most prominent citizens of Skambonidai was Alcibiades, the famous statesman and general who sealed the fate of Athens in the Peloponnesian War, by changing sides and joining the Spartans.
