The Isle of Man (Mann) or Ellan Vannin in Manx, is located in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland. One of the original places of Celtic habitation by those of Brythonic descent, it has also been inhabited and populated by Irish around AD 700 and vikings around the end of the 8th century. Apart from establishing the High Court of Tynwald (Ard-whaiyl Tinvaal - Manx), and creating land divisions, the vikings impact on the Manx culture and language was minimal although there is some evidence of modification of ogham inscriptions and some Norse influences. The famous Peel Castle was originally constructed by the Vikings and the Tynwald itself, is said to be the longest running and oldest parliament in continuous existence, being established in AD 979 and still functioning today.
