District Leader: Position is currently vacant
Whether because of his conversion to Christianity or for defensive reasons, Harald Bluetooth moved the political centre of Denmark from Jelling to Roskilde, on the island of Sjaelland. Having officially converted his lands to Christianity, Harald had the first church in Denmark erected in his new capital. Around 1080, King Cnut had it replaced using German stones and southern European tradesmen it stood until itself was replaced. Construction began on the current Roskilde Cathedral around 1200 under the direction of the French Bishop Absalon. It is reputed to be the first Northern Gothic Cathedral. Currently a Protestant church, it still houses most Kings (21) and Queens (18) of Denmark including Kings Harald Bluetooth, St. Cnut, Christian IV and the beatified Queen Margarethe. In addition to its religious uses, the Cathedral was used as the location where the Treaty of Roskilde was singed, ceding lands in Sweden and Norway, including Trondheim. In 1995, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. As the political centre, Roskilde also served as a staging point for war, which included the famed Viking ships. In 1962 5 ships, in varying sizes and degrees of decay were located in the Roskilde Fjord. These are on display at the Vikingeskibs Museet, where an extension was built (Museum Island) in order to create one of two virtual archaeology sites in the area. In July 2007, a newly built Viking ship sailed from the Island to Dublin, arriving in August. Nearby is located the Lejre Research Centre, an open-air Iron Age settlement has been created to replicate pre-historic Viking life.
