Hedeby, 'the town on the heath', was a Danish settlement from the late eighth century on the Baltic Sea coast of the Jutland peninsula. It became a major trading centre, sited as it was at the meeting point of several important trading routes. Ships went from Hedeby to places in Scandinavia and Germany, but also much farther afield, including Greece. The Norwegian king Harald Hardrada sacked and burnt the town in 1050, and sixteen years later it was plundered by the Slavs. After these tribulations, it was abandoned by its inhabitants and fell into disuse.
