Down in the Sulvian steam
|

In Bath today, so I shall (if the queue is short enough) be using my free pass to go down to the sacred spring in a few minutes. Much vapour in January. Shame you have to go over the road to swim in the waters now. I have some free passes for that too but forget to bring 'em! and the queue is always lonnnng |

Avebury still there.

I was in North Marsden with friends over New year and we went for a walk around Avebury on Dec 31. I always forget how massive some of those stones are. We really should make a better go of 'replacing' the destroyed ones the little concrete pillars look foolish. Pretty good gift/book shop in the village, pubs not so great in my opinion, but then I was driving so maybe that had to do with it. Now South Marsden is today innundated in our latest 'freak' ie normal weather. |

Dawn raid on Dorset
|
Posted at 04:00 EST

I meant to get up early and pack more in but it didn't really happen so it was 07:30 by the sun before the trip got under way, and I arrived in Dorchester about an hour before noon. I hit the county museum, a couple of bookshops and Maunsbury rings (henge converted to amphitheatre), Maiden Castle, Egardon Castle, a very long windy single track road, and Ham Hill by sunset. I forgot the Dorset Cursus, missed Abbotsbury and overshot Maiden Newton after an unexpected tunnel. Obviously I need to go back, realistically I should stay overnight next time it was 20:30 by the sun when I got back. I'm quite coming around the the Fearnly-Whittingstall way of thinking... |

Hillforts around Bath
|
Posted at 14:00 EST
|
On my way into Bath on Friday I got off the Motorway link road up the single lane track to the farm on the side of Little Solsbury Hill. This is a British hillfort occupied to around 100BC according to the National Trust noticeboard. I remember charging oround up here with my cousins when I was little but it's more of a nature reserve now so I stayed on the track around the perimiter, and admired the views and the defences, taking a few pictures.
On the way out on Sunday I stopped at North Stoke and walked up to Little Down, another large Hillfort with most impressive ramparts on the 'easy' side looking over Bristol and a quite repectable dicth in the 'hard' area where the level plateau of Landsdown (once the field area now the the race course) butts against it. I didn't have my map and was a little short of time and keeping an eye on a thunder storm south so I missed the rectangular fortification and the area marked Roman Site.
I was noticed that neither of these Hills realy has much of a view of the springs area where the Roman Sul/Minerva Sanctuary is. If you wanted to command that site Landsown or Beechen Cliff across the river would be more impressive. Of course you could sit in the swampy river bow where the springs actually are but that's just lazy.

Finally a camera and some batteries when I passed Wansdyke on the way into town. Pity that it was raining so much. Also took some pictures in the Roman Baths. |

Where's Wansdyke?
|

Went looking for Wansdyke this morning on my way back from a pub night. Unfortunately I didn't bring a good enough map with me and went all the way around the bit south of Culverhay without finding it. As it happened I had run out of the necessaries to get a picture of it anyway. Maybe next time. |

Quiet day

A surprise rain-free day allowing some digging to be done on the plot, bread and sheep's cheese and general autumnal tidying. Have to think about Samhain bonfire and other accoutrements soon, not much in flower this year. Geranium probably. |
