Let's see...books I'd recommend...there are so many it's hard to start. However, Here are a few of my all time favorites, I hope you like them too, or if you've not read them, let me draw them to your attention.
Non-fiction: A Brief History of Time, by Stephen Hawking. I also just received his latest book for Christmas, called The Universe in a Nutshell, which looks GREAT; A Distant Mirror, by Barbara Tuchman, one of the most interesting history books I've ever read; Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, one of the saddest books I've ever read; and last but not least, one of my new favorites: If Chins Could Kill, by Bruce Campbell, the star of the GREAT all time cult favorite movie, Army of Darkness, which actually is the third in the Evil Dead series by director Sam Raimi (Darkman, Spiderman, etc.) Anyway, it's Campbell's story of being a B-movie star, and it's written with style and panache, a truly wonderful and enjoyable book, even if you have no idea who he is. He's one of the few stars I would actually like to have a conversation with.
By the way, Bruce has a new book out, a novel, called Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way, and it's hilarious - highly recommended.
Modern Fiction: A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. This novel is by far the funniest book I have ever read. It's hailed as a literary comedy. Won the Pulitzer Prize. Whatever. If laughter is indeed the best medicine, this book qualifies as a wonder drug all by itself;
Classic literature: This list of favorites could consume days of thinking, but here are a few that come to mind immediately: Shakespeare, anything by Shakespeare...he's my favorite author, by far; Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo; Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens; Far From the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy; Moby-Dick, by Herman Melville, the poetry of Coleridge, especially Kubla Khan, my favorite poem in literature; the poetry of John Donne, perhaps the greatest writer of love poetry we've had; speaking of poetry, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; and on and on and on...
